Once you learn the lingo, you'll never panic-buy a restricted view seat again! When the box office is asking where you want to sit, maybe you find yourself scanning the seats thinking, "uhh...the middle." Too lazy to Google what a dress circle is and too over it to care - we get it. That's why you should check out this list of theater seating names - whether you want to see Hamilton, Les Mis, or anything in between!
Stalls (UK) / Orchestra (US)
The champion of the people! Let's keep things simple. The Stalls (known as the Orchestra in the US) are the seats on the ground floor, right in front of the stage. Basically, think of it as the theatre world's mosh pit (only with comfy seats and significantly fewer drinks being thrown around). You're close enough to feel right in the middle of the action, and if you want to catch every actor's twitch, tear, eyebrow raise and perfectly timed jazz hand, this is the place to be.Dress Circle (UK) / Mezzanine or First Balcony (US)
Bring on the drama and the view. Up a level, we have the Dress Circle (aka the Royal Circle in some theaters - because drama). Traditionally, this is where the posh crowd sat to show off their best frocks. Now, it's one of the best spots in the house.
You get a full view of the stage without having to tilt your head like you're doing a Victorian portrait. It's great for taking in the choreography, set design, and occasional mid-air acrobatics.
Upper Circle (UK) / Mezzanine or Balcony (US)
Sometimes called the Grand Circle or, more accurately, "way up there", this is the theatre's nosebleed section. You might have to tackle a few stairs and could briefly feel like you're watching the show from a hot-air balloon, but don't write it off just yet. The view can still be surprisingly spectacular, and if you're looking to keep the ticket price down, this is where some of the best bargains are hiding.Balcony (UK & US)
For the Brave and Budget-Conscious. Not all theaters have one, but when they do, the Balcony is usually the very top. These seats are not for the faint-heartedor anyone with a fear of heights.
Think of it as the theater version of the cheap seats at a football stadium. You're here for the vibes, the music, the "I just wanted to say I saw Cabaret live" experience.
They're the cheapest of the cheap - and often still a great time.
Boxes (UK & US)
Fancy Schmancy! Ever seen those little side rooms that look like they belong in Phantom of the Opera? Those are the Boxes. They're usually perched along the sides of the auditorium.
The view is often a bit angled (and sometimes not the best), but you're paying for privacy, comfort, and main character energy.
